RELIABLE POWER SUPPLY FOR CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH
Walking a distance of 3.3km along a particle accelerator at 2 a.m. to replace defective equipment parts is not one of the DESY engineers’ favorite activities and leads to frustration among the scientists performing experiments at the end of the “tube.” Thus, it was already clear at the start of the project that reliable power supplies had to be high on the list of requirements. But this was only one of several key features on the list of specifications.
The basis for the ultimate solution was an existing, compact 24 V / 240 W power pack that needed a number of modifications to meet the application’s requirements. Perhaps the most critical requirement was the CE certification of the application in which the power packs are integrated. In addition, availability had to be guaranteed over a period of ten years.
“We implemented a redundant system with two power packs per module to ensure a reliable power supply to all sections of the accelerator,” explains Carsten Müller, laboratory manager and plant engineer.
“It was critical for us that our partner in this project was able to meet our individual requirements, in particular with regard to modifications and CE certification. The availability over the project’s extended duration and the rapid delivery of spare parts for this customer-specific product were invaluable.
